UUJEC / UUSC MEXICO TRIP INFORMATION 2008

Labor Rights and Economic Justice
JustJourney to Mexico
May 24 - June 1, 2008

Join UUSC and UUJEC for a JustJourney experience to explore the important ways corporate-led globalization and free trade agreements like NAFTA have affected the lives of Mexicans, particularly peasants, women, indigenous people and migrant workers.

One of the promises of NAFTA was that it would create more jobs in Mexico and alleviate poverty. As in the US, the results in Mexico have not been black and white. As corporations and business interests praise globalization for expanding economic opportunities for workers worldwide, others have countered that globalization has devastated worker livelihoods and caused vast labor migration.

We invite you to:

1. Witness how workers' rights, particularly the rights of women working in the garment industry, have been affected by economic globalization and free-trade policy.
2. Discuss free trade agreements with government officials and businesspeople
3. Discover the new challenges and opportunities for organizing across boundaries of age, ethnicity, gender, and nationality.
4. Initiate an informed dialogue about global migration and the rights of migrant workers.
5. Meet with UUSC's partner organization and other human rights activists.
